Основная структурная и функциональная единица всех живых организмов. Все живые клетки содержат цитоплазму, окружённую плазменной мембраной. Большинство микробных клеток заключено во внешнюю жёсткую или полужёсткую клеточную стенку. Клетки содержат генетический материал ( ДНК), который контролирует наследование различных признаков, а также рибосом, необходимых для трансляции этой информации в белки.
Активно растущая клетка, в отличие от спорообразующей клетки не принимающая участие в половом размножении.

Метод соматической гибридизации, основанный на обработке группы клеток слабым высокочастотным электрическим полем, в результате чего клетки «выстраиваются» в цепочку, в зонах контакта после кратковременного импульса электрического тока образуются микропоры и изменяются свойства проницаемости клеточных мембран, в итоге происходит межклеточный обмен, включая перемещение фрагментов ДНК.
